Abstract
This study examined the mediating effects of Emotional Regulation Style on the Relationships between Vulnerability of depression and Interpersonal Problem. The subjects were 400 College students recruited from the Universities in Metropolitan Seoul and Gyeonggi areas. Depressive Experience Questionnaire(DEQ), Emotional Regulation Strategies Checklist, and Korean Inventory of Interpersonal Problem(KIIP-SC) were administered to the students. The results were as follows: First, the correlation analysis showed vulnerability of depression showed a statistically significant positive correlation with Interpersonal problem. The vulnerability of depression showed also a statistically significant positive correlation with avoidant/distractive regulation style, but vulnerability of depression showed a negative correlation with active regulation style. However, only dependency variable of depression vulnerability had a positive correlation with support-seeking regulation style. Avoidant/distractive regulation style demonstrated a statistically significant positive correlation with Interpersonal problems. However, active and support-seeking styles were negatively correlated with Interpersonal problem. Second, both self-criticism and dependency of depression vulnerability had significant positive effects on the Interpersonal problem. But, these vulnerabilities had significant negative effects on the active regulation style. However, only self-criticism depression vulnerability variable showed a positive significant effect on the avoidant/distractive regulation style. And dependency depression vulnerability variable showed a significant positive effect on the support-seeking style. But self-criticism depression vulnerability variable showed a significant negative effect on that. Third, the active regulation style showed a mediation effect on the relationship between depression vulnerability and Interpersonal problems. Also, avoidant/distractive regulation style showed a mediation effect on the relationship between depression vulnerability and Interpersonal problems. Finally, based on the finding results, the implications and limitations of this study were discussed.
